Teacher - Mr. Bouttell
Subject Area - Science Department
Technology Used - Google Sites
Description - The goal of this project was to create a fully functional website for the Mackenzie Science and Engineering Olympics which are hosted by the Mackenzie Science Club every year. When we were tasked for this project, we were expecting to make a website which would have description of events, a Contact-Us page, an About-Page and similar content. When we had our first meeting with Mr. Bouttell, we were shocked to learn that his goal was not just to have a website that displayed content, but also a website that ported the registration process online. The incorporation of a registration system was very challenging because we were limited to using Google Sites and Google Docs. We were to design and implement an entire registration process that was not only easy to use, but also easy to collect data from.
Tiger decided to handle the overall content of the website including event descriptions, about us and other such pages where as Kramay decided to handle the registration system. There were several learning opportunities in this project and by the end of it, both Kramay and Tiger could navigate through Google Sites and Google Docs with their hands tied behind their backs and their eyes shut!
We had many errors occuring throughout the span of the project including Google deciding to change one of their privacy settings which we were heavily relying on. We had to change everything to a new format only to discover that Google fixed their bug in just a couple of days. Such delays and such a daunting task had us working for more than a month before the website was ready to be rolled out.
Application for Other Subjects -
Although this project wasn't really oriented towards in-class learning, we did learn a lot about the flexibility of Google Sites and the adaptability of Google Docs. We stretched the limits of both of these platforms to use them for a registration system.
Google Sites
Google Sites is easy enough to be used by anyone and flexible enough to be used for any purpose. I would recommend Google Sites to any teacher in the school because once they understand how to use it, the possibilities with it are absolutely endless. Google Sites can be used for projects or ISPs. It can be used to showcase a class's projects or it can simply be used by a teacher to post subject related content online. Teachers can use Google Sites to keep the class up to date with an online calendar or with online announcements. Files can be uploaded to the site which can be downloaded by students. The applications for Google Sites are absolutely endless.
Google Docs -
Good Docs is an amazing utility with an ample amount of malleability and flexibility. Although not as stable and extensive as Microsoft Office, Google Docs offers a relatively stable online service that can be used for the back-end of websites. Not only is it a great tool to use with websites, it can also be used as a stand alone utility so that multiple people can edit the same document / spreadsheet. After using Google Docs for this placement, we have started using it more in our day-to-day school life, since its a great tool for collaborative editing.
