Mr. Carpenter - Guleed and Eugene
Teacher: Mr. Carpenter (Social Sciences / English / Library)
Subject: English, Library, Geography
Technology used: Google Docs, Delicious, Diigo, Jing
Description: For this placement, Mr. Carpenter asked us to find a resource gathering website that he can use for his classes and the library. He wanted a template where he could put headline links and make them rotate. Initially we thought that this could be completed using Diigo, but the visual options on Diigo were very limited. Pictures could not be uploaded and there was no animation feature. We then attempted to use Diigo's auto blog post tool so that resources could be gathered on Diigo, then sent to a blog where they would be animated. However, the tool did not work correctly.
Later we came across a website similar to Diigo called Delicious. This site is classified as a social bookmarking site, so users can gather interesting links and share them with others. On this site, links can be categorized and placed in different stacks. A stack is a group of links, often about the same topic. Once a link is added to the stack, Delicious automatically fetches a picture from the article to display within the stack. This is useful because it provides a visual to go along with the link, which is engaging for students. Once a stack is created, it will be saved to the account it was created with, and can either be public or private.
Unfortunately, we could not find a tool or feature on Delicious or any other website that will allow the headlines in a stack to rotate or animate. However, Delicious is a relatively new site and constantly adds new features.

Portfolio Piece
We decided to make a Jing video as our portfolio piece, which describes how to make a stack using Delicious, and tours the showcases the features of the website. The video can be viewed at: http://screencast.com/t/6wsOWmqBc

Applications for Other Subjects:
Delicious has applications in virtually every subject, particularly in social science, business and science courses. Teachers may use Delicious to gather articles relevant to their courses, and show them to students. This could prompt discussions about current events. For example, an environmental studies teacher may find interesting articles about global warming which would benefit the class. Business teachers may want to share artcles about recent economic events, and science teachers may want to share articles about recent discoveries and developments.
Delicious is useful for gathering all types of links, not only articles. A teacher may want to share study material and diagrams found online. A teacher may also find a well written essay and decide to share it with the class as a template for their essay assignment.
