Mr. Freedman - Janhavi & Salina
Teacher: Mr. Freedman
Subject: Grade 9 Business (BTT101)
Technology: Microsoft Access, Google Docs
Description Of Project:
Mr. Freedman wanted to learn more about the tools available in Microsoft Access. He wanted to be able to show his students how to successfully use the various tools in order to complete assignments relating to this software.
To achieve this, he requested a manual that depicted the main tools his students would be using throughout the unit. Therefore, we created a manual which included a brief description of each tool and the steps on how to use them.
In order to ensure that the students thoroughly understood Microsoft Access, we also created a cheat sheet for one of the assignments. The cheat sheet is similar to the manual except it enabled students to follow along, step by step, on how to use the tools to complete their first assignment.
To make the learning process easier, we paired the steps in both the manual and cheat sheet with screenshots. This would be very useful and helpful for those who learn better using visuals attributes.
Along with the manual, a walkthrough video was requested. This video was to visually aid the students so that they can see someone using the software instead of blindly jumping into the assignments. The video demonstrated how to use various tools in Microsoft Access and enables his students to visually follow along.
After creating all these resources, we also helped post them onto his website so that his students could refer back to it whenever they forget how to do something or if they wanted a better understanding of the features.
Uses in other classes:
This software can be used in multiple classes including business, accounting, math, the list could go on. Creating a database of any kind allows the student to start critically thinking from the beginning. Manipulating the database also enables the student to think “outside the box.”
Accounting/Business
Microsoft Access is useful in courses such as Business management, marketing or accounting because it helps you maintain your information, and requires little infrastructure to be supported.
For instance, in marketing class, you can create a record for the product and input its information such as; product’s name, description, price, etc. After recording you can set up tables, and queries to produce reports for the customers and companies in need.
Another example of the usefulness of Microsoft Access is the use of queries. This enable students to filter their data. They can select certain fields and categories that best match what they’re looking for. This software makes it much quicker to find specific data and also easier to have a more organised filing system.
Not only will this prepare the student for the business world but also for their personal life. They can also use MS Access for their personal database, and be able to keep track with almost any type of data.
