Mr.Galo - Johnny Baskin
Teacher: Mr.Galo
Subject: Math
Technology Used: Windows 8, Facebook, iPhone
Description of Project
In my teacher placement I was tasked with the project of helping Mr.Galo figure out how to use some of his technology. We went over the basics of various things such as Facebook, Windows 8 and iPhone apps and navigation so that he can use these tools to better connect with his students.
We first started by going over the basics of Facebook, its purpose and its features. I showed him how he could use it to connect with his family and friends but more importantly how he could also use it to connect with his students. Facebook is a great platform for teachers to use if they want to update students on assignments due, test dates and things like that. It is often better than having a site since students will already be on it unlike a site where students have to consciously go on it.
The next thing we went over was his iPhone I showed him how to navigate it and the basics. I showed him how he could use it to check emails sent to his tdsb email so he could have access to his students from anywhere. I also showed him the app store and some math apps that he might find useful.
Lastly I showed him how to use his new Windows 8 tablet/laptop. The Windows 8 gui is pretty different compared to the past few variation of Windows luckily Microsoft had created an easy to use gui and I was able to easily show him how to do everything that he needed. This included things like sending attachments in emails and opening the pdfs of his math textbooks something that could come in really handy when he's using his tablet in class.

Possible uses in other classes
I think that all the things that I went over with my teacher have a lot of value and can be incorporated into any subject. Using Facebook to connect with students is a simple process for both the teacher and student when comparing it to a teacher having to make a site. Facebook makes it easy for students to find updates on course information and resources because they are already on it and it's easy for teacher because Facebook has a simple interface that can be used by almost anyone and doesn't require much help once you understand the basics. Using an iPhone or other portable device can also be useful for teachers so that they can keep up with their emails. Lastly Windows 8 is a great resource for teachers because of all the possible things that you can do with it and it's simple interface. My teacher was using it for reading pdf's of the physical textbooks but it can do much more if the teacher has the desire to learn.
