Subject: English and Social Sciences
Technology Used: Windows Live Movie Maker, Google Sites, Adobe Photoshop, and Snagit
Description:
Ms. Gourley approached this placement with two ideas. The first was for us to teach her students how to use a video editing program for an upcoming video-trailer creation project in her grade 9 English class. The second was to help create a website for all of her classes, as well as teach her how to use and manage it.
For the first part of this placement, we decided to teach her class how to use Windows Live Movie Maker. We selected this particular program because we thought it was most accessible by most students because it is already pre-installed into all PC computers, and we believed that more students would have a PC computer than any other type. This portion of the placement was further divided into creating handouts for her class and then teaching her class. We used Adobe Photoshop to create our handouts and our goal was to make simple and instructional handouts that students would be able to use to have a general understanding of the tools offered by Movie Maker.

After we created the handouts we then went to her class to teach them how to use Windows Live Movie Maker. We spent one period teaching a lesson that we created about the Windows Live Movie Maker. This lesson was a sort of walk through and introduction to the basic tools that Movie Maker offers.
For the second part of the placement, Ms. Gourley asked to have a website created for her. She wanted a simple website, since she has very little skill with technology. The purpose of the website would be to add supplementary videos, post copies of handouts and other infrequent activities. Ms Gourley wanted a site that would be low maintenance and would not require a lot of attention.
We decided that a Google Site would be best for her. We created a basic Google Site for her to use as well as handouts for future reference on the basics of using Google Sites. To create the handouts we used a program introduced to us by Ms Cuttle, Snagit. We used this tool to take screen shots for our handout. Snagit was much better than simply pressing "print screen" and it gave us many more editing options, such as allowing us to immediately draw on our screen captures.

After creating the website and handouts, we plan to hold lessons where we teach Ms Gourley how to use and manage her website. We aim to make her capable of independently using her site efficiently.
Portfolio Piece - Video:
Here is a video we made for the portfolio piece. It is a tour and description of the Google Sites we created for our teachers. We created it using Windows Live Movie Maker, since we spent half our placement learning how to use it.

Applications for Other Subjects:
Windows Live Movie Maker: Windows Live Movie Maker is a tool that can be used in numerous subjects. Creating videos for class, such as trailers in English or skits for the social science courses can make classes a lot more fun and interesting. Not only can videos be created to be marked, but they can also be used to enhance projects, such as ISPs or major presentations. For this reason, Windows Live Movie Maker can be used in any class that has major presentations or projects.
Google Sites: Google Sites is a great website platform for teachers of any subject. It can be used in any subject where the teacher wants to be able to interact with students in different ways. A Google Site would be very useful for teachers of any subject who feel uncomfortable or unskilled with technology because of its easy interface.
