Ms. Law - Ben & Emil
Teacher: Ms. Law (Science Department)
Subject Area: Science
Technology Used: Netbooks, Diigo, Google Earth, Tiki Toki, Infogr.am, Audacity, Windows Movie Maker
Description:
Ms. Law asked our group to help integrate technology into the Earth & Space Science unit project in her grade 10 class. The students had to create a marketing campaign that marketed their solution to a global warming issue somewhere in the world. We ended up redesigning the old project’s tasks and instead of scrapping the original tasks we modified them to be completed using technology. In addition, we modified parts of the project so that it hits most of the KICA requirements for the unit.
The next step in our placement was the students working on the actual project. We went to Ms. Law’s classroom every few weeks and introduced a new part of the project, the technologies needed to complete the part, and a full tutorial on the technologies. The students were given the school netbooks each class. As the cart had wifi there were no problems with access to computers. The technologies taught to the students were:

- Diigo - The students used this online tool to pool their research into a single area
- Google Earth - The students used this Virtual Globe program to create tours of the regions their project revolved around
- Tiki Toki - The students used this online tool to construct interactive timelines
- Infogr.am - The students used this online tool to construct Infographics
- Audacity - The students used this program to create the audio for a commercial
- Windows Movie Maker - The students used this program to edit video and produce a commercial

Applications of Technology for Other Subjects:
The school netbooks is a cart full of netbooks with Wi-fi. It provides any easy way for students to access technology in the classroom without teachers having to deal with the hassle of booking the school lab. The netbooks cart is applicable to any subject that uses computers.
Diigo is a very useful online tool for group projects that require research. Students register on the website, join into groups, and download a toolbar on the browser they’re using. Once that’s all done, the students can conduct research on the web. When they find useful material, they bookmark the page using the Diigo tool and that page is then shown in the group the student is part of. In addition, students are able to highlight important points on the page, add notes to the pages they find, and make comments on each others research.
Google Earth is a useful tool for any subject that involves locations around the world. It is a virtual globe program that allows students to see any part of the world through satellite imagery. Google Earth also provides capabilities to build tours, allowing students to display multiple locations in the world in one smooth presentation.
Tiki-Toki is a online tool used to build timelines. Students are able to create visually appealing timelines that have integrated media (i.e. photos, videos). Tiki-Toki would be a really good match for subjects such as history, where students could for instance build a timeline about an era. Other subjects such as science, geography, ect. could find the ability to build timelines useful when dealing with events over time.
Infogr.am is an web tool used to build infographics. It provides students with a simple interface, allowing them to build online based infographics that have integrated pictures, videos, graphs, and text. The graphing capabilities in Infogr.am are extensive and powerful allowing students to create a wide variety of graphs with a few simple clicks. Infogr.am is useful for subjects in which creating an infographic is applicable. Such subjects include: business, science, history, and geography.
Audacity is a program used to create and edit audio. The program can be used for simple editing of audio (cutting, copying, extending), but is also very powerful when used to it’s full extent. Subjects that would find audacity applicable are any subjects that have presentations. Such subjects include: business, arts, science, languages, history, and geography.
Windows Movie Maker is a program used to create and edit video. The program is fairly simple and provides the bare minimum for video editing. The lack in features makes the program extremely simple to use, allowing for students to begin editing their videos after 5 minutes of playing around which is a rarity with most other video editors. Windows Movie Maker is applicable to any subject that has presentations as a component. Such subjects include: business, languages, science, history, arts, and geography.
