Ms. Law - Maggie, Derrick, and Eric
Teacher: Ms. Law (Science Department)
Subject: Grade 10 Science & Grade 12 Biology
Resource Used: KeepVid, Google Sites, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Drive
Description:
Initially, the tasks for this placement were to download all of the videos from Ms. Law’s PowerPoints and find free apps related to Grade 9 and 10 Science and grade 12 Biology. Ms. Law was also interested in finding out what would happen with the integration of Facebook into her classes. However, after our initial meeting with Ms. Law, several changes were made to these tasks. The Facebook idea was removed, since it was easier for Ms. Law to be contacted via email. Aside from the removal of that task, the other tasks remained the same. In addition to downloading videos from the PowerPoints, Ms. Law also suggested for us to create PowerPoints for the Grade 9 Space unit. Normally, the Space Unit in Grade 9 is long and extensive, hence it is usually assigned as a research assignment, presentation, or another project while learning another unit. By creating these PowerPoints, the students now have a resource to refer to.
The first task was to download videos from her Grade 10 Science and Grade 12 Biology PowerPoints. KeepVid, a site created to download videos from various external sites including Youtube, was used for the first task. This site is convenient for anyone who would like to keep a copy of the video. This helps prevent videos linked in a class’ PowerPoints from being deleted off of Youtube. This task was completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Alongside this, Eric, the most technologically inclined member helped Ms. Law with her Google Site, specifically to transfer the data (such as PowerPoints, videos, etc.) onto Google Drive. This allowed for a greater storage space compared to the extremely limited space given on Google Sites. He also assisted Ms. Law in deleting past announcements, which had previously caused her site’s news feed to be full.
Each of us were given a Grade 9 Science textbook. The Space Unit consisted of three chapters, which were divided equally amongst us. We were each responsible for our own chapter’s PowerPoints, created from a set of self-made notes. Additional relevant and reliable resources, including videos and interactive tools, were placed in the PowerPoints.
Throughout this placement, there was a bit of difficulty in creating PowerPoints from scratch, since we were constantly trying to summarize notes and arrange it in a manner that was informative, appealing to the eye, and easy to read.
This placement, primarily the process of creating PowerPoints, allowed us to think from the perspective of a teacher. It gave us an opportunity to learn how much work teachers put into their lessons in order to make create PowerPoints for classes they have. By helping Ms. Law, she also learned how to navigate and edit her site to better efficiency.
Applications to Other Subjects:
PowerPoints: The process of creating PowerPoints can be applied to almost any subject. The first step to creating any PowerPoint requires summarizing text in a clear and concise manner. To create good notes, an adequate understanding of the material and the ability to filter out redundant content is required.
Apps: The second task was to find relevant science applications. This requires previous background knowledge needed to discern suitable apps.
Websites: For anyone interested in creating a website, especially for a class, it is useful to be able to know how to maximize the storage space. Google Sites is very limited in storage space, but if the information from the Google Site is redirected to the Google Drive, it allows for greater storage. This knowledge of websites can be applied to many subjects that deal with technology in general, such as the IDC course.
