Ms. Osier - Channiyka
Teacher: Ms. Osier
Subject: Business
Technology Used: Google Sites, SMART notebook
Description: The project had two separate goals, one was to update Ms. Osier's current grade 9 BTT course website, and teach her to how to maintain the site on her own. The second was to create SMARTboard activities for her senior classes.
Goal #1: Google Site- Ms. Osier had an existing Google site, however, she neither liked it nor did she know how to manage it. We started off by establishing what she wanted the final product to look like, as well as what she wanted her students to be able to do, and see on the site. Ms. Osier's main concern was having the necessary information while maintaining the layout and visual clarity of her site. Therefore, we decided to keep the site simple and easy to use, as well as low maintenance. Ms. Osier had pages for some of her units but not all, and the site was not organized or clear to navigate. We created pages for all her units, with sub-pages for minor units and then linked the sub-pages to text in her main unit descriptions. We had certain sub-pages devoted solely to attachments, we used the file cabinet template for that, as to make it easier and more efficient to upload files, while keeping the page visually organized as well. Rather than attaching a Google calendar, Ms. Osier preferred to create a page called "Homework/Announcements" and remind her classes about upcoming events via the page. Finally, because her class had "Fun Friday" every Friday she wanted to add a page that would have business related activities they could do on those days. To maintain the clean visual appearance of the site the links to games and business news sites were not visible on the page, rather everything was linked to pictures of the desired entertainment, or videos themselves were posted on the page. Application to other subjects: A website can be used by any teacher for any subject. A website is simply an online platform to store information for a class to view or have access to. Teachers can take it a step further and create an interactive website designed so that students can communicate with each other and themselves. Depending on the website, students can upload their assignments straight unto the site, and download new assignments as well. Websites have many other features, like calendars, polls, embedded videos etc. A website can be tailored to a teacher's requirements and be used however they desire.
