DESCRIPTION:
Teacher: Admin, Sac & Ms. Mansouri
Subject: School Website
Technology Used: Wordpress & Google Drive
This IDC project consisted of helping out SAC, Ms. Mansouri, and Ms. Diakun with the school website. Each of these teachers’ desires focused on modifying different parts of the website. SAC wanted to update the SAC page to include a message from the president, and SAC’s most recent members. Ms. Mansouri, who teaches a Design and Technology course, wanted to learn how to edit the Design and Tech page on the school website. In addition to this, she wanted our group to resize the photos on the Design and Tech page. Lastly, Ms. Diakun wished to have everything on the website updated, from the teacher directory list, to the clubhouse. In addition to these demands, our group took initiative to change various aspects of the website to make it more aesthetically appealing.
After getting our project, we went straight to work by making a list of what needed to be updated and acquiring data about teachers and clubs that corresponds to this year. After gathering and sorting information, our group split up and each began to update separate parts of the website. After weeks of work, we obtained very successful results. If one were to browse through the recent version of the school website, they would notice numerous differences
For Ms. Diakuns requests; we updated all of the outdated information of the website. We included more recent information about the execs and mission of student council, music council, and athletic council. In addition to this, we created tabs which extend out to display information about each council. Secondly, the faculty and clubhouse were updated to include the more recent information. Now, each teacher in our school is included in the directory (along with their credentials), and users can access different faculties by pressing on the buttons we created. Also, club information was changed to include new clubs and the most recent executives of each organization. Thirdly, athletics were updated to include the sports offered at our school this year, and the teacher websites were updated to include all the William Lyon Mackenzie teachers. Lastly, the department subsites of the school website were pulled in to the main page for organizational purposes.
For SAC’s request, we edited the student council page. The SAC page was changed to include the most recent members, and a message from this year's president.
For Ms. Mansouri’s requests, the Design and Technology page was reordered to include most recent post to less recent posts. As well as this, the google documents (located on the Design and Technology page) with student’s work were resized/rotated, and noticeable links were created on the page that would direct users to the google documents folder. Lastly, tabs were created to organize the gallery of pictures into years.
Other jobs our group members did include editing the home screen. The aesthetic of this page was improved by resizing the slideshow pictures, and adding new pictures in the slide show. This included a picture of students studying, to portray the excelling academics of our school, as well as a beautiful picture of our school during the fall time. Next, The Lyon was updated to have most recent newspaper issues, the Yorkdale page was reordered to have events listed from most recent to least recent, and the MAC monthly page was also updated to include videos from this year.
Our group’s work on the school website can be very beneficial to classes, subject areas, students, and parents. Students now have access to an updated database of teacher contact information. Before updating this directory, the main resource for students to find a teacher email was through messaging their classmates, or posting on the William Lyon Mackenzie Facebook page. This is a method which is not guaranteed to give a student the most accurate answer, as other classmates may not be so reliable. Now, instead of messaging classmates for a certain teachers email, they can now just visit the school website. This way, students are guaranteed to have the right email address for a certain teacher when they want email assignments or ask any questions.
Another way this website can be beneficial to our school is through the use of this website during course selection. Instead of asking teachers about their course, students can visit each department and read about what each subject can offer them. This will help students choose between courses, and help students discover what they are interested in.
Thirdly, this website can be used as a way for parents to communicate with the school. With the updated school councils page, mac monthly videos, and clubhouse list, parents can review the website to get a good sense of the environment of William Lyon Mackenzie. In addition to this, parents can review each teacher’s credentials, as well as contact an educator while browsing on this website. This way, parents will feel confident that their child is learning from a qualified educator, and can easily talk via email to a teacher when they have any concerns.

TECHNOLOGY USED
AND
USES IN OTHER CLASSES OR SUBJECT AREAS:
GOOGLE DRIVE
Google Drive is an online website where files can be shared between Google users. Files from pdfs, word and images can be uploaded on google drive. On this online platform, more than one person can edit a document/ image as long as they are given permission to do so. This function gives users the option to work collaboratively and efficiently with others. As for the school website, some of the documents/images that cannot be directly uploaded to Wordpress (due to file size issue) can be uploaded to Google Drive. These files can simply be linked on the school website which directs the users to the Google Drive page. Google Drive is one of the more popular online platform for educational uses. Google Drive is commonly used to work collaboratively between students when working on a group project (usually science subjects). At times, Google Drive can be a substitute for Google Forms. When collecting data, you can create a Google Doc that can be edited by people who have access to the link. As opposed to a Google Form, Google Doc provides more freedom as to what the content can be (image, text font, color...etc)) |
WORDPRESS
WordPress is an online platform where users can create simple to very complexed websites. Through Wordpress the school websites can provide many different resources and information for students, teachers and parents in a user friendly format. The website provides general information about the school (ex. special programs, teachers, contact information...etc) and shows the life of students at MAC (clubs, Mac Monthly, the Lyon...etc). Furthermore, Wordpress made it possible for the school websites to have variety of visuals and functions with different plug-ins. Students can use Wordpress to create resources for their school projects and can be use to create websites for their school clubs. At most times, Wordpress creates a communication bridge between students and their peers or their teachers. Wordpress is very versatile therefore there is no restriction as to what it can be used for. Wordpress can be applied to any subjects or classes if one wishes to. |
